BAJA BUG, ROCK CREEK

On Route 45 in Rock Creek, this incredible bit of automotive history appeared recently - a homemade Baja Bug fashioned from a chopped-up Volkswagen Beetle. It is a bit more extreme than most, with headlights that look like a pair of hopelessly crossed eyes, and a variety of sheetmetal colors that indicate low-buck fabrication.

I snapped the photo while driving back from Cantini's Market, a familiar spot in the village for those seeking beer, snacks, and the staples of an all-American diet.

In bygone days, the Baja Bug was a familiar sight, thanks to the J.C. Whitney catalogue. But this particular example is unique, and quirky.

The price? I didn't pause to ask. But perhaps on my next visit, I'll have a closer look...
